Soya Shammi Kebabs

We, Indians always like to have something with our evening tea. I don't mean biscuits, but something more, like snacks. Deep fried, shallow fried, steamed, baked, grilled or whatever it be, there is no end to the list of snacks available around all corners of the country.

If I were to categorize some of the popular snacks in India according to the above classification, this is how the list goes.

Deep fried - samosas, pani puri, dahi bhalla, pakoras (bread, paneer, onion…) aloor chop (popular in Bengal), kachoris and many more.

Shallow fried - bread rolls, aloo tikki chaat, shammi kebabs, shawarma

Steamed - momos, dhokla

Baked - cakes (if it can be called tea time snack, although we love the combo), namakpare, pizza

Grilled - sandwiches, kebabs and so on.

Not so popular but a very tasty snack is soya shammi kebab. It is shallow fried and can be enjoyed by both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Why should you try it?

Contains relatively less calories as it’s not deep fried and doesn’t include aloo. Tastes yummy and is quick to make.

Let’s get started.

Ingredients
Soya nuggets (2 cups)
Water for boiling
Ginger, garlic and green chili paste (1 tablespoon together)
Chopped onion (1 medium sized)
Roasted spice powder (half teaspoon of cumin, shah jeera, fennel, 1 clove dry roasted and ground)
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder (half teaspoon)
Lemon juice (1 tablespoon)
Sugar ( half teaspoon)
Chopped coriander (optional)
All purpose flour (2 tablespoons)
Oil (4 tablespoons)

Procedure
1. Boil the soya nuggets for 5 minutes in a kadai. When done, strain and keep aside to cool.

2. Squeeze the excess water from them and grind them to a granular paste.

3. Take the paste in a large bowl and mix chopped onions, ginger, garlic and green chili paste, dry roasted spice powder, salt, lemon juice, turmeric powder, sugar, chopped coriander and all purpose flour (for binding).

4. Take a small portion and flatten between palms like a patty. When done keep the patties inside the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

5. Heat oil in a pan or kadai. Place the patties and shallow fry them till golden brown.

Serve hot with ketchup or a dahi coriander dip and of course a cup of your favourite tea.
